Lake Michigan Water Patterns

The views of Lake Michigan are ever evolving, but I especially love watching the water patterns on a calm day.

With a few slight changes to wind speed, surface currents, or light direction, you can experience an entirely new view within a very short period of time.

I’ve always enjoyed waking up for sunrise — they are absolutely beautiful to see in person (and it makes afternoon napping a little easier).

When you begin watching sunrises and sunsets on a continual basis, you start to notice patterns and similarities that are fun to discover.

Here are a few images with similar themes. A good mix of sunrise and sunset photographs, from this year and from 2018.

A cloudy sky and an icy lake form abstract patterns on Lake Michigan (February 10th, 2018).

Winter is my favorite time of the year to take long walks along Lake Michigan. With the freezing weather, the lake forms new shapes and abstract patterns that are a delight to explore and photograph.

The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) has forecasted a warmer winter for the Great Lakes Region, so I’m not sure how many views like these will occur this year.

As this winter moves forward, I’ll continue to watch the forecasting reports — and hoping for the best!
